One Band, Two Guys, Three Legs
Boozin’ with Brass Castle

Brass Castle is a two-piece band from Atlanta, Ga. They play rock music. They play loud. Both members take turns playing guitar, drums and singing. One of them, Christian, has an artificial leg. I’ve seen him take it off on stage while playing drums and toss it into the crowd. A great live band. They were going to call their new record “One Band, Two Guys, Three Legs.” I think they came up with that name after a hard night of drinking. They changed their minds after sobering up.

We did our “Drinks With” interview with these two, Christian Gordy and Chris Strawn, at El Myr in Little 5 Points.

Dry Ink: Thanks for doing this guys, appreciate it.

Christian Gordy: Thank you for having us.

DI: Are you familiar with “Drinks With?”

CG: I read the interview you did with Brent Hinds of Mastodon. I loved it. I want us to down more drinks in this interview then you did with him. I want drugs, too. Let’s get unholy!

DI: First things, first. Let’s get some drinks. (Nate, one of my favorite bartenders in Atlanta approaches. I order a gin and tonic. Christian gets a PBR. Chris orders a Schlitz). On with it. How long have you been together?

Chris Strawn: Next question. I don’t like it, move on.

CG: About four years.

DI: When did you put out your first record?

CG: We put out Get on Fire in 2003, I think.

DI: I like that record a lot.

CS: We hope you like the new one.

DI: I do, love it. I got an advance copy of it last week. I think it’s great. When does it come out?

CG: 666. It comes out on Tues. June 6th, 2006. It’s on Velocette Records.

DI: Yeah, tell me about that.

CS: Well, they used to be Capricorn which was formed by Phil Walden back in 1969. He’s responsible for putting the South on the rock and roll map with bands like The Allman Brothers. He passed away last month on April 23rd. His daughter runs the label now, and she heard our stuff and wanted to put out our record.

DI: How did you record the new album?

CG: We recorded it at our friend Jason Walden’s house in Grant Park. We did it on a 16-track reel to reel with a lot of random mics. And a lot of Freon.

CS: Yeah, we drank Schlitz, inhaled Freon and made an album.

DI: That sounds like fun? Maybe we should order some shots? (Nate comes by and we order three shots of Jameson).

CG: We like the album a lot. We’re just a little tired of hearing the songs right now. We’ve probably listened to them a few hundred times by now. We produced it ourselves.

DI: I love that song “The Hawaiian.”

CS: Yeah, that’s been everyone’s favorite.

DI: I need to ask Christian a personal question. How did you lose your leg?

CG: In a fishing accident when I was five. I was in a boat with my dad. I just caught a catfish and an alligator popped out of the water. It got a hold of my leg and just wouldn’t let go. Now they call me the “One Legged Bandit.”

DI: God, I don’t believe you but that’s a great story.

CG: It’s more interesting than what really happened.

DI: Where do you guys hail from? (Another round of drinks show up along with three shots of Patron tequila).

CS: Jacksonville Fla., the armpit of America.

CG: Yeah, the penis of this country.

DI: So, are you guys big there?

CS: Yeah, it’s always nice to go home. We moved here shortly after forming the band. We have a good following there.

CG: We’re huge with 15- to 17-year-old girls there.

DI: I hear you have a great fan base with middle-aged Korean moms?

CG: Well, in Korea we do.

DI: So, you guys are thinking of making this a career?

CG: Well I gave up my dreams of being a nude model when I lost my leg.

DI: I love the cover of the new album. Who shot it?

CG: Michael Schmelling did the photography. He’s worked with Wilco and OutKast. He’s great.

DI: I heard you guys got crazy at the photo shoot.

CS: We drank beer naked in a river in Macon, Ga. I was naked throwing a football and wearing a biker’s cap.

DI: Sounds like a good time.

CS: Yeah, no one’s gonna see those shots. I like the way it came out, though.

DI: Well, what’s next for Brass Castle?

CG: We’re building a home studio. We’ll continue to write, rock and record.

CS: We’re going to do a movie. (A final round of drinks gets delivered to the table).

DI: Well, I wish you the best with the new record and everything else you are doing.

CG: We love Dry Ink and “Drinks With.” Let’s get some shots.
