Noot d’ Noot are off the Dick Cheney. These boys and girls are on a mission with absolutely no luggage. I saw them a few weeks back and my crotch was soaked. I made out with a Chinese girl and danced with a black kid. Then I went home and gave it to my wife better than she’s had in a good minute. Yes, a good old fashioned rubbin.’ You know what I mean.
The songs are funky and it’s all about bringing it back. When I say bringing it back I mean back to the way it used to be. There was a time not too long ago when there were block parties in the street and music was fun and people weren’t embarrassed to dance. That’s what I’m saying kids, get your arse to a Noot d’ Noot show and dance. Like I said, it’s about the beats.
You heard it here, Noot d’ Noot are a party band.
Dry Ink caught up with Mathis Hunter/percussion.
Dry Ink: You have a new 12″ coming out? What is it called?
Mathis Hunter: Cash For Gold. There are eight tracks. This was originally planned to be a 12″ single for the track “Fingers Like Steeples”, but we figured since its the same price whether you put 10 minutes or a full album on it, we might as well pack it out.
DI: Who put it out? What label?
DI: What is next for you boys? Shows? The summer? Any out of town dates?
MH: We’re ready to go wherever we are summoned, but it is difficult to cover our financial bases with such a large band, not to mention find a place for us all to sleep. We had a couple of gigs in NYC and we all split off into pairs of two or three at the end of the night. We spent the whole next day trying to find each other and a lot of folks we didn’t even find until showtime at the club the next night.
DI: Will the record come out on disc also or will it just be available for download?
MH: As far as the physical version, we are pressing 500 copies on vinyl with a hand stamped cd inside that has the entire record and an extra track. It will definitely be available through I-tunes and most likely through a few other digital routes. Also, we actually recorded a handful of tunes with Ed Rawls during “Cash For Gold” sessions that will be on the next record. We’ve got a lot of stuff written for it, so we hope to continue working with Ed towards the end of the summer.
DI: And how do you guys write? Does someone just start playing a riff and do you work around it?
MH: Any way we can, but its a fairly collective process. A lot of times we just vamp at practice and record it. Then we’ll go back and listen for good grooves and/or melodies and then rework that later. Sampling and looping is still a tactic we implement often. The key is the groove though, if we get a good bass and drum pattern, we know we got a song.
DI: How many folks are in the group now? And does the number go up and down?
MH: Ten folks in the group now. That’s a steady number, and its always the same folks, but we got a handful of people who travel on business endeavors so occasionally we’ll show up with as few as eight. Generally though, we got the whole crew.
DI: What is the date of the release show and who else is on the bill?
MH: The show is Sat. June 20th, and our conga player’s group Ile’ Tambor will be joining us. They’re a traditional Afro-Cuban Folkloric group and they are the real thang. The Brothers Funk will be DJing as well as DJ Gnosis, so it should be pretty ill.
DI: We’ll see you there. Thank you for your time and please keep providing the beats. Love, peace and hair grease. And Black Toast.
