Wes Duvall is an artist based out of Brooklyn who is originally from Atlanta. We met at a hardcore show in the West End section of the ATL in the late 90’s. He was wearing pleated shorts and high top Ponys. My sweatpants were pleated and were tight at the bottom. We got drunk on wine coolers and played dominoes. He is an amazing person and artist and a lot of fun at parties. I spoke with Wes recently and did a brief Q&A with him about his upcoming show “Eve of Destruction” in Brooklyn. Here you go. If you can, you should check it out.
Dry Ink: Can you tell me a little about the Eve of Destruction? What’s the theme?
Wes Duvall: Eve of Destruction is an upcoming opening featuring the artwork of myself and Avi Spivak. The name is borrowed from a protest song written by P. F. Sloan in 1965. Avi and I were searching for a theme for the show and it just seemed to fit. Both of our work touches on themes from the song—youth, frustration, love and loss, they’re all there. Also, the show takes place on the eve of Halloween, a.k.a. Devil’s Night and Mischief Night, so the name seemed appropriate.
DI: How would you describe your style?
WD: My style’s been described as “graphic, brilliant and engaging.” I believe the graphic and engaging part are pretty right on. “Brilliant” might be debatable. I’ll let the viewers decide.
DI: Is this your first show?
WD: This is my second show in New York. I was invited to show pieces in a group show at Brooklyn’s Riviera Gallery in 2007. This show is long overdue.
DI: How many pieces did you submit to the show?
WD: I submitted 10 original prints as well as a few of my illustrations from The New York Times.
DI: Where is the show being held and for how long will it run?
WD: The show is being held at Union Docs in Brooklyn. We’re having a big opening on Oct. 30th at 7 p.m., with a black and orange dress code. Then the works can be seen on an appointment basis through November.
DI: Can you tell me a little about Avi Spivak?
WD: I met Avi at a Stalkers show here in New York, and we immediately hit it off. Avi’s a really talented guy. He makes great art and puts out a comics/rock n’ roll zine called Human Being Lawnmower. His style is akin with Gary Panter, R. Crumb and the whole Underground Comix movement. You can check out his work and bio at http://avispivak.com
DI: Thank you for your time and good luck with the show.
